Susan Thigpen Carlson, J.D., M.A.

Susan Thigpen Carlson, J.D., M.A. Serves as Assistant General Counsel of Family Health International (FHI 360) and is based in the Washington, DC office. She manages the international portfolio of legal matters and the Business Services Unit serving over 65 countries.  She serves as a Director or Trustee for locally incorporated FHI 360 offices in Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania and Zimbabwe as well as Achieving Health Nigeria Initiative (AHNi) and Gold Star Kenya.  She works closely with the FHI 360 Office of Compliance and Internal Audit (OCIA) and FHI 360’s Office of Human Resources.  Her professional experiences span both the private and non-profit sectors, as well as the federal government – including three presidential appointments at the U.S. Department of Labor and three years at the American Red Cross headquarters in development. Her work with donor relations and accountability, ethics and labor issues coupled with her knowledge of the federal regulatory environment provide a solid foundation for her role at FHI 360. She has co-authored publications on corporate governance and diversity. Ms. Carlson holds a Juris Doctor from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill and a Masters of Arts in Teaching from Duke University.
